Intensive care medicine or critical care medicine is a branch of medicine concerned with the diagnosis and management of life-threatening conditions that may require sophisticated organ support and invasive monitoring.
Over the years, critical care medicine or intensive care medicine has branched out as a separate branch of medicine wherein patients requiring support for pressure instability (hypertension/hypotension), airway or respiratory compromise, acute renal failure, potentially lethal cardiac arrhythmias, or the cumulative effects of multiple organ failure, which is now more commonly referred to as multiple organ dysfunction syndrome may be admitted and treated appropriately under strict protocol based observation and treatment. Patients may also be admitted for intensive/invasive monitoring, during the crucial hours after major surgery/risky procedures when deemed too unstable to transfer to a less intensively monitored unit.
The philosophy of critical care medicine revolves around the dynamics and the interrelated functions of nine key organ systems namely cardiovascular system, central nervous system, endocrine system, gastro-intestinal tract (and nutritional condition), hematology, microbiology (including sepsis status), peripheries (and skin), renal (and metabolic) and respiratory system.
Unity Hospital is equipped with a Level 3 - Intensive care unit which means patients requiring two or more organ support (or needing mechanical ventilation alone) may be treated with one nurse dedicated to the care of one patient alone along with a doctor present in the unit 24 hours per day.
The patients are treated under strict aseptic conditions in individual patient cubicles under constant monitoring of vital parameters by high-end monitors which are also connected to a central monitoring station.
Critical care services at Unity are further compartmentalised as Medical and Cardiac intensive care unit, Neurological Intensive care unit, Surgical Intensive care unit and High definition unit.
